The story, inspired by the 1981 Uncanny X-Men storyline "Days of Future Past" by Chris Claremont and John Byrne, focuses on two time periods and Wolverine being sent to 1973 to save the future of mutantkind. The film stars an ensemble cast, including Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Halle Berry, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page, Nicholas Hoult, Shawn Ashmore, Peter Dinklage, Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart. The story was conceived by Simon Kinberg, Matthew Vaughn, and Jane Goldman, with Kinberg writing the screenplay.
In a dystopian future, robots known as Sentinels are exterminating mutants, as well as humans who harbor the genes that lead to mutant offspring. A small band of mutants manages to evade the Sentinels with the assistance of Kitty Pryde, who can project a person's consciousness back in time to deliver warnings. Pryde's group convenes with Storm, Wolverine, Professor Xavier, and Magneto in a monastery. They decide to have Pryde send Wolverine's consciousness back to 1973 to prevent Mystique from murdering Bolivar Trask, the creator of the original Sentinels. The assassination will make Trask a martyr, while Mystique will be captured and her DNA will be used by Trask's followers to create advanced Sentinels that are near-invincible due to their ability to mimic and adapt to mutant powers. Xavier and Magneto advise Wolverine to seek out both of their younger selves for aid.
Although Trask is saved, the world is horrified by the existence of mutants. President Richard Nixon approves Trask's Sentinel program and arranges an unveiling in Washington. Trask's scientists recover Mystique's blood from the Parisian street. Meanwhile, Magneto intercepts the prototype Sentinels in transit and laces their polymer-based frames with steel, allowing him to control them. At the mansion, Xavier stops taking his serum and slowly regains his mental powers, while losing the ability to walk. Through Wolverine, Xavier speaks to his future self and is inspired to struggle for human-mutant peace once again. He uses Cerebro to track Mystique, who is now heading to Washington.
Nixon unveils the Sentinel prototypes on the White House lawn as Xavier, Wolverine and Beast search for Mystique among the audience. Magneto commandeers the Sentinels and attacks the crowd, then sets the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium around the White House as a barricade. Nixon and Trask are taken to a safe room, accompanied by the Cabinet, Secret Service officers, and a disguised Mystique. Wolverine, and Beast try to stop Magneto, but he pits a Sentinel against the two and impales Wolverine with rebars, throwing him into the Potomac River afterwards. Meanwhile, in the future, an army of Sentinels attacks the monastery, killing all the mutants except Xavier, Magneto, Pryde, and Wolverine. In 1973, Magneto pulls the safe room out of the White House and prepares to kill Nixon while declaring mutant supremacy in front of a live broadcast. Mystique, disguised as Nixon, incapacitates Magneto with a plastic gun while he is distracted. Xavier persuades Mystique not to kill Trask and lets her and Magneto flee. Mystique is recognized for saving the President's life, the Sentinel program is canceled, Trask is arrested for selling military secrets, and the dystopian future is averted. Wolverine wakes up at Xavier's school in a new future timeline and finds Iceman, Rogue, Colossus, Pryde, Beast, Storm, Jean Grey, and Cyclops alive. Back in 1973, Mystique, impersonating Stryker, rescues Wolverine from the river.
